Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance. Veterans Day is now called that to commemorate all veterans, and was originally to commemorate the armistice which ended World War One starting on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 11 November.

Veterans Day was first celebrated in 1919, when it was known as Armistice Day. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance. It was not until 1938 that Congress passed a bill declaring Armistice Day to be an annual national holiday.
President Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served, both in war and peacetime. On the same day, unidentified soldiers were laid to rest at Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
